Pools and When Swimming isn’t Fun

Australian Labradoodles are known for their playful personalities, affectionate nature, and that wonderful fleece coat we all love. But what about water? Are Labradoodles natural swimmers? Should you encourage them to take a dip, and how do you keep them safe while doing so?

Whether it’s a backyard pool, a calm lake, or a fun beach day, here’s everything you need to know about water play and your Labradoodle.

Are Labradoodles Natural Swimmers?

Many Labradoodles love water—it’s in their DNA! With ancestors like the Poodle (originally bred for retrieving in water) and the Labrador Retriever (one of the best natural swimmers out there), it’s no surprise that most Labradoodles take to water naturally.

That said, every dog is unique. Some puppies are confident the first time they see a pool, while others might be cautious or hesitant. The key is to let your pup explore water at their own pace, building confidence step by step.

Introducing Your Labradoodle to Water

A positive introduction can make all the difference:

  • Start Slow: Begin with shallow water, like the edge of a lake or a kiddie pool.
  • Use Treats & Praise: Make water a positive experience with encouragement and rewards.
  • Show Them It’s Safe: Step in first to demonstrate (bonus points if you have a confident dog friend to lead the way).
  • Never Force It: Forcing a scared dog into water can create lasting anxiety. Go at their comfort level.

Safety First: Water Play Rules for Dogs

Even if your Labradoodle loves swimming, safety always comes first:

  • Supervise at All Times: Dogs can tire quickly, even in shallow water.
  • Consider a Dog Life Jacket: Especially for open water or if your dog is still learning.
  • Watch for Hazards: Check water for strong currents, sharp rocks, or unfamiliar wildlife.
  • Provide Fresh Drinking Water: Prevent your pup from drinking lake, pool, or salt water (which can cause tummy upset).
  • Rinse After Swimming: Chlorine, salt, and even natural pond water can irritate skin and coat.

What About Pools?

Pools can be fun, but they come with their own considerations:

  • Teach Exit Points: Your dog should know where and how to safely get out.
  • Skip the Diving Board: High jumps and rough landings can hurt joints.
  • Limit Pool Water Drinking: Chlorine isn’t dog-friendly.

A rinsing and thorough brushing after pool time keeps your Labradoodle’s coat healthy and mat-free.

Grooming & Coat Care After Swimming

A Labradoodle’s soft fleece or wool coat can trap moisture, which may lead to matting or irritation if not cared for properly. After swimming:

  • Rinse Well: Use clean, fresh water to remove chlorine, salt, or dirt.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Focus on ears and under the collar area, where moisture can linger.
  • Brush Out the Coat: Prevent tangles and mats while keeping that silky look.

When Swimming Isn’t Fun

Not every Labradoodle loves the water—and that’s okay! Some dogs prefer to splash at the edge or simply watch the fun from dry land. Respecting their boundaries keeps the experience positive. Over time, gentle encouragement might change their mind—but forcing them can have the opposite effect.

Safety Tips and Hazzards

Swim Smart, Play Safe

At Heritage Manor Labradoodles, we expose our puppies to a variety of sounds, textures, and experiences—including gentle water play during early socialization. This early exposure encourages curiosity while respecting each puppy’s comfort level, helping them build confidence from the start.

Whether your Labradoodle grows into a dock-diving enthusiast or prefers to wade and splash along the shoreline, the key is always safety, patience, and fun.

Swimming is not just a great form of exercise—it’s also an incredible bonding activity that keeps your Labradoodle happy and healthy. With a thoughtful introduction, proper supervision, and a little post-swim coat care, water play can quickly become one of your pup’s favorite summer adventures.

So grab that life jacket, pack some treats, and head to the water—it’s time to make a splash!
