Springtime Essentials for your Labradoodle

At Heritage Manor Labradoodles, we love the fresh energy that spring brings—longer days, colorful blooms, and endless opportunities for outdoor fun with your beloved doodle. But as delightful as the season can be, it also poses some unique health and grooming challenges for our wavy-coated companions.

From itchy allergies to toxic plants and the often-overlooked importance of proper paw grooming, here’s everything you need to know to keep your Labradoodle safe, healthy, and comfortable during springtime adventures.

1. Fleas and Ticks: Tiny Pests with Big Consequences

As temperatures rise, fleas and ticks become more active—and they pose a serious risk to your Labradoodle’s health. These tiny parasites can transmit diseases like Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis, and flea infestations can cause itchy skin, hair loss, and even anemia in severe cases.

Tips for Protection:

  • Use a vet-approved flea and tick preventative year-round.
  • Regularly check your dog’s coat and skin, especially after walks in wooded or grassy areas.
  • Keep your yard trimmed and remove piles of leaves and debris where ticks may hide.
  • Wash your dog’s bedding regularly and vacuum carpets to eliminate flea eggs.
  • If you spot a tick, remove it carefully with tweezers and monitor the bite site.

For more detailed information on fleas and ticks, the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) offers a helpful care guide on their website.

2. Toxic Spring Plants to Avoid

The sight of daffodils and tulips may warm your heart, but certain spring flowers and plants can be dangerous—even fatal—for dogs if ingested. Labradoodles, especially young ones, are curious and may nibble on leaves, stems, or bulbs.

Top Toxic Spring Plants to Keep Away:

  • Tulips – bulbs are highly toxic and can cause nausea, drooling, and even heart issues
  • Daffodils – especially toxic to the stomach and nervous system
  • Hyacinths – can lead to vomiting and tremors
  • Azaleas & Rhododendrons – small amounts can be deadly
  • Lilies – extremely toxic and can cause kidney failure

Even brushing up against certain plants can lead to skin irritation, particularly in allergy-prone dogs.

Safe Alternatives for Dog-Friendly Gardens:

  • Snapdragons
  • Marigolds
  • Camellias
  • Rosemary (also repels fleas!)
  • Petunias

If you suspect your Labradoodle has ingested a harmful plant, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately at (888) 426-4435.

3. Don't Forget the Paws: Trimming & Hygiene Matters

With all the outdoor fun spring invites, Labradoodles can quickly collect moisture, dirt, and debris between their paw pads. That adorable mop of hair between their toes? It’s also a hidden haven for yeast and bacterial growth, especially if it stays wet or matted.

Why This Area Needs Attention:

  • Moisture trapped in the fur between pads creates a warm, dark, damp environment—ideal for yeast and bacteria.
  • Excessive hair here can lead to slipping indoors or debris becoming lodged, causing discomfort or limping.
  • Regular maintenance prevents painful paw pad infections and keeps feet healthy and odor-free.

How to Trim Paw Hair Safely:

Use a dog paw trimmer to gently trim the hair between the paw pads, taking care not to nick the skin or the delicate webbing between the toes. Go slowly and work with caution, as this area can be sensitive for your dog.

After trimming, clean your dog's paws—a gentle rinse or a bit of dog-safe shampoo can help remove any debris. Be sure to dry thoroughly, especially after baths or wet walks, to prevent irritation or moisture buildup between the pads.

Bonus Tip:

Check nails while you’re down there! Keeping nails trimmed prevents joint stress and slipping, especially on hardwood floors.

A Season of Joy—Made Safer

Spring is the perfect time to strengthen your bond with your Labradoodle through play, exploration, and outdoor time. With a little extra vigilance—keeping fleas and ticks at bay, avoiding dangerous plants, and giving those precious paws some TLC—you’ll ensure your furry family member thrives this season.

At Heritage Manor Labradoodles, we’re always here to help you navigate the joys and responsibilities of doodle ownership. Whether it’s grooming advice, wellness tips, or connecting you with trusted local pet professionals, our community is your go-to resource.
